‘It’s always a good idea not to stack up too many appliances on a single outlet with junction boxes, although as long as the house and the appliances have the correct fuses, potential for accidents is minimised.’
South Africa stuck to the three-pronged plugs, however. This was partly due to the fact that American light switches were by then adopted here, which only fitted into what became known as 2×4 and 4×4 boxes – which were also the right size for the big British sockets, says Buyst.

Upon opening the box and gleefully removing the contents, I was rather shocked that no solar panels were included. In the interest of providing a more comprehensive review, I contacted The Gadgeteer’s Owner/Editor and Gadget Guru, Julie, and agreed to purchase an accompanying 60-watt solar panel.
Good Housekeeping did a survey of travel hair dryers and recommends the $14.99 Conair Minipro, which is dual-voltage and cheaper than a transformer. There aren’t a lot of good reviews of flat irons out there, but the well-reviewed HSI Professional 1 is dual-voltage and only $40 on Amazon.

That allows the adapter to remain extremely tidy and compact, all while featuring multiple built-in attachments that allow it to work across 150 countries. Moreover, the Dandelion comes with a carrying case, which is just as sleek as the device itself, making it easy to keep organized in your luggage.

After I received the Autowit jump starter from GenHigh, I put the word out that I needed to test it, and I was going to serve as a one-man auto rescue service. I was surprised to receive a few calls over a period of a couple of weeks, as dead batteries are more common than I would’ve guessed. (Or perhaps people just wanted to watch me try to jump-start their cars for a good laugh, knowing exactly how little I know about vehicles.)
